Coronavirus changing the way we celebrate Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day in the time of COVID-19.

Like everything else this year, Mother’s Day will be much different than in years past.

The spectre of the COVID-19 Coronavirus hangs over the celebrations and is on the mind every son and daughter planning a special event for an elderly mother.

Liz is one of them.

She has a small gathering at her mother’s home this year.

The guest list kept short so there is enough room for social distancing.

“We’re going to do it outside, where everyone can be separated,” Liz said.  “Just about eight of us spread out in the yard.”

Though Liz is holding the event at her mother’s home, her mother won’t be attending.

She’ll be inside the home, safely sequestered and able to look out at her children and grandchildren.

As an elderly woman, she is keeping safe from the dreaded infection.

Social distancing, holding an event in a large enough space so a select few can gather safely and enjoy each other’s company.

That’s how Jackie Lupo is holding Mother’s Day this year:

“We’re going to have a Sunday Mass,” she begins.  “And then we’ll probably get together, just a few of us, and the children only.”

Even with the threat of COVID-19 on everybody’s mind as they plan this year's Mother’s Day gathering, humor in the face of it is still present.

Lyle is among them, he jokingly commented on how his family is handling the coronavirus threat and the traditional crawfish cookout for Mom:

“We’re gonna boil crawfish and my sister, she’s self-quarantining, so she’s gonna drive by and we’re gonna throw some crawfish in her car and she’s gonna go home and eat’em and we’re gonna go from there.”

Lyle’s wife chuckled as he described his plans for WWL.

Debbie is a daughter and mother who is working on the celebration for Mother’s Day, but one traditional dish is not on the menu.

“They asked us if we wanted to do crawfish, but it ends up being a lot of work for moms.  Cause you have to clean it all up and it stinks!  So I don’t want to do that.”
