Coronavirus is having a direct effect on politics: Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin today announced that the presidential primary set for next month is postponed two months.
"Today I have certified that a state of emergency exists and requested that the governor issue an executive order postponing the elections this spring," Ardoin said. "We have requested postponing the April 4th primary election until June 20th, and postponing the May 9th general election until July 25th."
Ardoin noted that many poll workers are over the age of 70, putting them in a group at risk for severe complications were they to contract COVID-19. Many polling places are also in nursing homes or retirement centers.
The governor's office has indicated that Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards will grant the request.
