The New Orleans City Council voted unanimously today to rename Jefferson Davis Parkway after Dr. Norman Francis.
The name change will be effective January 1.
Jefferson Davis was president of the Confederacy. Norman Francis is the retired president of Xavier University, the campus of which borders S. Jefferson Davis Parkway.
It is the first of many street renamings in the offing, and the city of New Orleans looks to remove public honors given to Confederates, slave owners, and racists.
