The countermeasures against the coronavirus pandemic are putting a lot of people out of work. The Louisiana Workforce Commission says it has been slammed with claims.
“30,000 new claims for this week. To give you a comparison, last week we had 1,700 new claims for the entire week,” said
Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Dejoie.
Dejoie says they have put extra people on handling new claims. She said people who file in a timely fashion could start getting checks very soon.
"We anticipate that our first checks will be received midweek next week,” she said.
The benefits won’t completely replace a paycheck but may offer a financial band-aid. Dejoie says the maximum benefit in Louisiana is $247 per week.
