Early voter turnout is heavier than in 2015

Since early voting began on Saturday the polls have shown a heavy voter turnout.

Republicans appear to be far more motivated to pack the polls this year than they were in 2015.

"At this point in 2015, the early voting electorate was 35 percent Republican, it's 42 percent Republican," said John Couvillon with JMC Analytics, says part of the GOP advantage seems to be a demotivated Democratic base.

"You have an electorate that thus far is turning out noticeably less Democratic than almost anybody had forecast," Couvillon said.  "That would tend to put Governor Edwards' numbers more towards the mid 40s."

He says that’s likely due to John Bel Edwards’ attempts to appeal to Republicans and a heavy emphasis on winning the primary outright.

Couvillion says if these voter demographics hold,  Governor John Bel Edwards will not be able to avoid a runoff, contrary to what recent polls have shown.

We asked folks in Rivertown why they early voted.

"It's much more convenient, there are less lines and it's on my way home from work," said this man.

"We have season ticket to LSU, and there's no way I will be able to vote on election day," said one lady.

Election day is October 12.  Early voting ends this Saturday.
