Edwards closes bars, movie theaters, gyms and casinos

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards today stiffened the restrictions on gatherings across the state to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

"All bars, movie theaters and fitness centers and casinos will close," Edwards announced. "Restaurants will not be allowed to have patrons eat on-site, rather they will be limited to drive-thru, pick-up and delivery."

The governor stressed that cases of COVID 19 keep climbing across the state and a third person has now died.

Edwards says these measures are aimed at slowing the spread, so the system can handle it.

"We do this to protect the public because we cannot run the risk overwhelming our capacity to meet the demand for critical medical services," the governor explained. "That's what you are seeing in places around the world, who didn't take aggressive mitigation efforts early enough."

As of Monday evening, the Louisiana Department of Health reported 136 people testing positive.

"The updated proclamation calls for a limit to gatherings of no more than 50 as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention," a news release explained.

At a White House news conference, however, President Donald Trump said that was now reduced to calling Americans to limit gatherings to no more than ten people.
