Her own dogs turned on her.
A 72-year-old woman has died at a Southshore hospital after she was attacked by her two pitbulls Thursday afternoon at her home in the Mandeville area.
“This is very sad,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “My thoughts and prayers go out the victim’s family and to the neighbor who was injured trying to help her. I also thank the deputies who responded and provided medical care in an effort to try and save this woman’s life.”
It began just after 2:15pm Thursday when a neighbor saw the dogs attacking the woman in her home off Chevreuill and McDonald Streets.
When deputies arrived at the home, the attack was still on-going.
The Deputies made entry to the home. That when the dogs turned their attention from the woman and attacked the deputies, who used lethal force, killing one of the animals.
The second dog fled the residence.
The Deputies tended to the woman, applying a tourniquet to stop bleeding.
They then tracked down the second dog at nearby residence.
The second dog then charged the Deputies and they again used lethal force, killing the second dog.
The woman was transported to a hospital, where she is reported to be in critical but stable condition.
She ultimately died of injuries.
The neighbor sustained bite wounds to his arm and was treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene, and a child at the residence received superficial wounds trying to stop the attack, but was not bit.
