Today is the day that some folks will be shooting fireworks in the backyard and it's a day when emergency rooms see there share of injuries.
Dr. Megan Maraynes, Medical Director, Pediatric Emergency Department at OMC Jefferson Highway and Section Head, Pediatric Emergency Department OMC Jefferson Highway said they'll see all types of injuries from fireworks.
"The most common injuries are burns, most of these involve hands and fingers," Mayrenes said. "The most important thing is in case of one of these injuries is to seek medical care immediately."
There are some eye injuries, too. But it doesn't end there according to Mayrenes.
"We see a lot of other injuries, as well," Mayrenes noted. "Water related injuries, near drownings, broken bones, trauma just from running around playing outside. It ranges from serious to not so serious."
Maranges said they are always a little more vigilant on the 4th of July because they know people will be out there having fun and not paying attention to what they are doing.
She adds only sober, responsible adults should be shooting fireworks. And she adds even sparklers are extremely hot and can cause serious burns, too.
