Residents got a rude awakening today from the management of the Studio-6 Extended Stay Hotel when management put up notices saying the hotel was closing and everyone needed to vacate the premises as soon as possible.
Studio-6, the long-term stay equivalent of Motel-6, posted on their webpage this evening:
Due to current conditions this location is unable to accept new reservations at this time. Our top priority is always the safety and health of our guests and team members.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Residents were not happy by the development and many voiced their anger to the manager as they were leaving the property.
WWL-TV’s Danny Monteverde talked with former residents by cell phone. “I saw people packing kids and a lot of luggage in their cars and I was like, what is going on?” Danielle Seymour explaining her plight, having lost three jobs in short order. “One day one, one day one, one day the next one. Just like that. Right now, no evictions are supposed to happen in New Orleans.”
That’s what Alexis Erket, a staff attorney with Southeast Louisiana Legal Services told Monteverde. “It is technically illegal. They cannot put people out in cases of serious medical emergencies.”
Management says the closure came at the order of the Health Department, calling for residents to be cleared from the Studio residence and relocated to the Motel-6 due to coronavirus concerns.
Ultimately, the parent company said both facilities would be shuttered.
