Landlords in New Orleans will be able to evict tenants once again.
Landlords will soon be able to evict tenants once again.
Governor John Bel Edwards suspended all evictions until June 5 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
However, starting June 8 some landlords will be able to file eviction proceedings, while others will have to wait until August 25.
Under the CARES Act some "covered properties" or "covered dwellings" which are subject to federally backed mortgage loans, will still fall under the eviction moratorium. Eviction proceedings can be filed if the property is not protected under the CARES Act.
Renters are obligated to pay their rent as agreed with the landlord but some landlords could negotiate any rent owed by a tenant but are not legally obligated to do so.
Low-income tenants who need legal help or questions about their renter’s rights can call the Southeast Louisiana Legal Services Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 1-844-244-7871.
