The NOPD is investigating a fatal hit and run taking place late Sunday night at North Claiborne and Esplanade avenues.
Police received the call just before 11pm about the crash. Arriving officers found the 58-year-old victim unresponsive lying by the sidewalk on North Claiborne Avenue. The victim was suffering from apparent injuries sustained after he was struck. EMS transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined the man was crossing North Claiborne when he was hit by the SUV. The driver of the SUV was not identified.
The suspect vehicle initially stopped and was photographed by a bystander.
The victim remains unidentified at this time, Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine official cause of death and release the victim's name, upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
