FEMA and the FCC today will test the emergency alert system. It’s a nationwide test set to hit all radios and TVs at the same time.
This afternoon at 1:20 p.m., FEMA and the FCC will see how well the system works, sending out the signal to begin the broadcast to all stations at once-- so channel surfing isn’t going to avoid it.
“We want to make sure that we’re maintaining the capability with the whole nation -- private sector partners, radio stations, cable providers,” said FEMA coordinator Randy Meshell
“Last year’s test focused on Internet base systems and we’re trying to test a situation where the Internet might be down," he said.
Meshell said this test is not being sent to phones.
