All New Orleans-area flood gates should be re-open today

All the flood gates in the New Orleans area that were closed for Barry should be reopened by today.

The flood protection authority closed 252 gates.

"We have 244 land-based flood gates in the system and eight, what we call complex structures, basically navigation gates, on waterways," said Derek Boese of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East.

It was an unprecedented closing of all gates in the area -- both on the river and in the hurricane risk-reduction system.

"We closed 47 gates on the river, for example, in Orleans Parish and 11 in St. Bernard Parish on the river," said Boese.

The simultaneous closing of river and hurricane gates was brought about by the forecast that called for a huge surge of water upstream on the river -- initially for a 20-foot crest, later revised to 19 feet, then as Barry approached landfall, to 17.1 feet.

The river ended up cresting at 16.93 feet Friday afternoon, and had fallen to a height of 16.2 feet by Sunday evening.
