Forecast: Above average hurricane season, 16 named storms

A new prediction today from the nation's leading hurricane forecasters.

Colorado State University says expect more than usual activity in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean when the season starts in barely two months.

"We are seeing signals in the early April environment that suggest that we may have an above average hurricane season," CSU Forecaster Jhordanne Jones says we should expect 16 named stroms between June 1st and November 30th, 2020.

The average since 1981 is for about 12 named storms in a given year.

"We are seeing very warm surface temperatures in the Atlantic," Jones explained. "Which is very favorable for hurricane activity."

Colorado State is predicting eight hurricanes with four of then becoming major storms at category three or above.

Seasonal #hurricane forecast from @ColoradoStateU calls for above-average season: 16 named storms, 8 hurricanes & 4 major (Cat 3+) hurricanes. Reasons for above-average forecast include anticipated lack of #ElNino and warmer than normal tropical Atlantic.https://t.co/jZGKiBmkic pic.twitter.com/sX5C21JxvX
