Former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Joe Horn has apologized for his part in a scheme to rip off a health care program.  The 47-year-old Horn released the apology through his attorney 2 days before he pleaded guilty in the scheme.

“In life we are challenged to make choices that may shift or slow the trajectory of our future,” the emailed statement from Horn said.  “Unfortunately, we do not get to determine the consequences of ill-advised decisions.”

In the statement Horn said he was sorry for what he had done.

“I accept full responsibility for my actions," Horn said. "I sincerely apologize to my family, dear friends and fans for any pain, disappointment or betrayal of trust my indiscretions may have caused. I sincerely thank God for those who continue to love and support me.  I can assure you your confidence is not misplaced because one dark period does not define or doom a person.”

The guilty plea by Horn was entered in a federal court in Kentucky, on Thursday.  Horn pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud after admitting that he received $149,775 for fake claims submitted through fake invoices and phony prescriptions in 2018.

The guilty plea by the former Saints wide receiver who retired after the 2007 season, suggests he is cooperating with federal authorities in the hope of getting a more lenient sentence.  Horn could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.  He is tentatively scheduled to be sentenced April 24.
