Now that Hurricane Laura has moved on attention turns to the recovery effort in southwest Louisiana. Emergency managers in the hardest hit parishes say damage to buildings and homes is widespread.

“Some indicated that they felt like every structure in the parish had some type of damage,” said Steele. “Not everything may be a total loss, but there could be minor roof damage on some. But they felt like there was hardly anything spared.”

Steele confirms that six people died in Louisiana, when Laura made landfall as a category 4 hurricane.

“Four were from trees falling on homes in the middle of the storm; we had one boating related death, and one related to carbon monoxide poisoning from not operating a generator properly,” he said.

Attention now turns to emergency recovery and early damage assessments. The National Weather Service says Laura had sustained winds of 150 mph, when she hammered southwest Louisiana.
