Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency today, in anticipation of what he expects from what will be a hurricane in the Gulf.
Edwards has put emergency agencies all over Louisiana on full alert as the state braces for a category one hurricane to be named Barry.
He says it could be a slow moving storm, moving at just five miles per hour.
''It will seem in all likelihood that the storm is stationary, and will just keep dumping heavy rains on certain areas and it could last into next week,'' Edwards said.
There is a chance that the river will rise high enough to top some levees.https://wwl.radio.com/articles/mississippi-river-projected-hit-20-feet-s...
''Potential storm surge near the mouth of the Mississippi River will be three to four feet on Friday or early Saturday, so the river level at New Orleans could hit 20 feet,'' said Edwards. "There could be a considerable amount of overtopping of the Mississippi River levees in Plaquemines Parish on both the Eastbank and the Westbank."
