Grand Isle gets water back after barge severs pipe

After a barge severed the line sending drinking water to Grand Isle, crews worked overnight to get the pipe repaired.

"Water service has been restored to the town of Grand Isle," officials announced Saturday morning. "The severed water main between the town of Jean Lafitte and Grand Isle was successfully fused, pressure tested and activated."

Officials say residents and businesses do not have to take any protective measures. "A boil water notice will not be required because of the efforts of the Jefferson Parish Water Department to manage the system pressure, the addition of water to the system by barge and tanker truck and the assistance of the residents in Grand Isle to conserve water. Combined, these efforts allowed the water system to maintain the required minimum system pressure until repairs of the water main could be completed."
