A growing trend, employers offer promotions without increase in pay

Imagine getting a huge promotion with your company, but no pay raise to go with it.

Getting promoted without being compensated is becoming increasingly common in the workplace.  Many times if there is no extra pay, other potential benefits like extra days off could be offered.

"That would seem like a poor way of trying to motivate an employee, saying 'hey you're promoted,' i.e., 'we're giving you more work without more pay, here's some extra time off, but you may not be able to take because you'll be too busy,'" said Jeremy Beus, assistant professor in the Rucks Department of Management at LSU.

Beus doesn't buy it and says to him it seems like an inneffective way of trying to motivate someone.

"It sounds like a good way of overworking them and causing them to leave if they have an alternative," Beus said.  "To me, that would incentivize more capable employess to look for employment elsewhere."
