The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the New Orleans metro area Sunday.

"We'll see actual temperatures in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees," says WWL-TV meteorologist Chris Franklin. " The Heat Index may well be over 108...maybe 110."

He urges folks in the area to take caution. "Maybe try and avoid being outside during the afternoon and early evening. At best, our chance of a cooling shower today is just 10 percent."

The Heat Advisory is in effect from noon until 7 o'clock this evening.

Extreme heat is dangerous because it can push your body temperature beyond its limits. If your body can’t cool itself fast enough, permanent damage or even death can occur.

"Try to stay cool, and stay hydrated," says Franklin.

Heat exhaustion or stroke may set in if individuals and pets are not adequately cooled and/or hydrated.

"Stay out of the sun and wear a hat. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks."
