A 12-year-old girl is accused of making up threat of a shooting at Houma Junior High School. Investigators say it started as a private message sent via Instagram on Tuesday, and blew up from there.

"The sender stated that there was going to be a shooting at HJH and named that student along with two other students as the targets," the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "During this investigation TPSO Personnel received multiples calls from frantic parents of HJH students along with other concerned citizens who received this information via social media."

The sheriff's office says they tracked leads to the suspect, a 7th grade student, and after further investigation, authorities say she admitted to sending the message "as a joke."

The child was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Justice Center on one count of felony terrorizing. Officials say deputies went to the school this morning to make sure it was safe prior to opening.

"Parents should talk with their children on a daily bases and be aware of what they are posting on social media," said the sheriff's office. "This is a very serious matter that disrupts the daily operations of the school system."
