How to help Hurricane Laura evacuees in the New Orleans area

Convention Center

Thousands of Hurricane Laura evacuees have been put up in hotels in the New Orleans area. While they're here, the city of New Orleans is going out of their way to hook them up with resources.

"In the city of New Orleans, we are sheltering approximately 9,200 evacuees in about 33 different hotels," said New Orleans Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness director Collin Arnold.

Arnold says they're helping distribute relief supplies and more.

"We've got the ability through the National Guard to do COVID testing if so desired, just a lot of things going on here today."

Arnold says the United Way and the Junior League of New Orleans have been providing a tremendous amount of help -- and are accepting help from people in the community who want to get involved.

"Do not bring any donating items to this facility, please," Arnold said while speaking at the city's resource processing center at the Morial Convention Center. "We're coordinating that, and you can also find this at ready.nola.gov, through the United Way and the Junior league of New Orleans. They are accepting those types of donations."
