Invest 92L still a guessing game for later this week

The trough of low pressure over the southeastern U.S. known as Invest 92L is forecast to move southward, and when it hits the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, develop into a tropical depression or maybe even a tropical storm.

"Kind of unusual: it's still over land," said WWL-TV meteorologist Alexandra Cranford. "It will emerge as a little low pressure area over the Gulf of Mexico by later this week, by Thursday, and it will have a chance of developing."

The million dollar question is once it develops, then where does it go? Alexandra says that's still up in the air.

"What it may do is skirt along the northern Gulf coast," she said, "and could bring us some rain from roughly Thursday through the weekend."

The latest information from the National Hurricane Center says that development is likely.

"Environmental and ocean conditions are forecast to be conducive for development and a tropical depression is likely to form by the end of the week while the low moves slowly westward over northern Gulf of Mexico. Regardless of development, this system has the potential to produce heavy rainfall along portions of the northern and eastern U.S. Gulf Coast later this week."
