Jefferson Parish Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley has been appointed to be the Superintendent of Education for Louisiana. Brumley will fill the position once occupied by John White. The Sabine native was one of 21 applicants.
During his interview, he described a team effort to improve public education.
“Keeping them inspired to do this work, because I believe in our people, but I also believe people need inspiration and then shared accountability from the superintendent on down for doing those things,” said Dr. Brumley.
Dr. Brumley has led Jefferson Parish Schools since 2018. Before that he spent six years as the superintendent of the DeSoto Parish School System which became an A-rated district under his watch.
Dr. Brumley says early childhood education is very important to him.
“It’s not just saying we got the class, there’s an adult in the room, it can’t be that,” said Dr. Brumley. “It’s got to be quality too, it’s got to be access, it’s got to be about engagement, it’s got to be about the things that are shown to matter in terms of developing that early brain.”
What would Dr. Brumley like to see from teachers?
“You’re an effective teacher if you take the resources that you have, build relationships with the kids and their families and at a minimum, move them a year academically for a years worth of instruction, despite the challenge the child faces,” he said.
