When the Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society's management contract for the Plaquemines Parish animal chelter runs out, the Louisiana SPCA will step in and take over management of the shelter.

PAWS and parish leaders announced earlier this year that the two would part ways. PAWS then approached the LA SPCA, based in New Orleans, about handling Plaquemins Parish's stray animal needs.

"Although PAWS will no longer manage the day-to-day operations of the animal shelter, we are committed to animal welfare throughout Plaquemines Parish," said Tammy Gagliano, PAWS Board President. "We will show our support for the Louisiana SPCA through fundraising efforts."

It's the first time the LA SPCA has ever operated an animal shelther outside of New Orleans' city limits.

"With our first-ever location expansion of the Louisiana SPCA, we are proud to continue serving the Plaquemines Parish community the way PAWS has done for so many years," said Louisiana SPCA CEO, Ana Zorrilla. "Over the last few months the PAWS team has done a tremendous job at finding homes for the 350+ animals in their care. They truly are an amazing organization and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for our new partnership."
