The National Hurricane Center now forecasts Tropical Storm Laura will make landfall near Morgan City, Louisiana as a hurricane Wednesday into Thursday.
That would have the eye missing Southeast Louisiana as it moved inland between Lafayette and Baton Rouge.
The significant shift in the forecast follows a steady series of changes pushing the system further and further west.
If this trend continues, it would reduce the impacts on the New Orleans area, while keeping the city on the wet side of the projected hurricane.
The Hurricane Center still doesn't have a lot of confidence in this forecast.
"The details of the long-range track and intensity forecasts remain more uncertain than usual," the advisory explains.
Meanwhile, the track for Tropical Storm Marco has shifted further to the south.
The Hurricane Center is now calling for a landfall in Texas between Galveston and Corpus Christi as a tropical storm.
That moves it further away from Louisiana. If this trend continues, Louisiana would feel less and less impacts from Marco. In fact, Louisiana is almost entirely out of the cone of error for Marco now. How much rain Louisiana sees from Marco will depend how close it gets to the Louisiana coast before turning toward Texas.
