Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng called on the faith based community today to help spread the word that things are still headed the wrong way.
"This is going to get worse for us before it gets better," she explained. "We are in no way near coming out of this."
She says the medical and mathematical models are clear. Deaths in Jefferson Parish doubled today from 12 to 24. There are now 548 cases in the parish.
"This is still ahead of us yet, and this is my concern because we are weary, we're tired, we're emotionally tired, but we are going to pull through."
Lee Sheng says in addition, she is troubled by all of the lay offs and hard times businesses are going through.
"I am certainly concerned on the medical front, but I am concerned on the economic front," the Jefferson Parish President told WWL's Tommy Tucker. "It keeps me up at night, 'Are people hungry? Are people hungry in the parish I serve?'"
She says she understands that it is tough on everyone to stay home and self isolate.
"I know people are getting tired of it, and they want to start getting back to things, but we as a community are no where near that level."
Lee Sheng is calling on local clergy to help get the message out that people must stay home and away from each other.
"We're gonna really call out all of our leaders to help spread that message and pray, and pray with us as well."
