Line of storms with history of floods and tornadoes approaches Southeast Louisiana

Nasty weather is raking across Louisiana and could cause trouble in the New Orleans area.

"Some storms will move through ahead of a squall line across the Northshore to Baton Rouge," WWL-TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum explained. "They will spread south into metro New Orleans around midday."

He says we could see some pretty good downpours and high winds.

"These storms could be strong to severe with heavy rain.  Then the squall line will move through this afternoon into the early evening across all of Southeast Louisiana."

Nussbaum says these storms could contain a few tornadoes with the damaging winds and heavy rain.

Strong to #severe thunderstorms are expected today across SE LA. The main threat is damaging winds, but we could also see some hail and a few tornadoes. Stay weather aware today! #lawx #BeOn4 @WWLTV pic.twitter.com/zHDWOYsFSG

"The Storm Prediction Center has us in a Slight Risk for severe weather today. The main threat will be damaging winds, but we could also see some hail and a tornado or two. Additionally, heavy rain is expected with rain totals around 1-3". This could lead to some street flooding on both sides of the lake."

This line flooded areas of Texas and spawned tornadoes in the Ruston, Louisiana area.

He expects things to get much better after around 5:00pm.

"The rain and storms will end this evening and we will have partly cloudy skies tonight."

After that?

Friday will become mostly sunny and less humid. High temperatures will be warmer as they climb into the lower 80s. The weather will be much better at the Fairgrounds and TPC of Louisiana!

Weekend Forecast: We will have some wonderful weather all weekend!  High pressure will sit over us, so expect plenty of sunshine each day. High temperatures will be in the lower 80s. This is perfect weather for Jazz Fest and the Zurich Classic - don't forget your sunscreen and stay hydrated!
