Lion exhibit returns to Audubon Zoo

The roar is back at Audubon Zoo as the Lion exhibit opens tomorrow.

In just 80 years, the lion population in the wild has decreased from 450,000 to just 20,000 today.

Audubon Zoo Vice President and General Curator Joel Hamilton is excited to see 4 lions back at the zoo.

"It's been about 5 1/2 years since we've had lions at the zoo and we are opening a brand new exhibit and our pride is 1 male and 3 females," Hamilton said.

There names Nia, Kali, Zuri and Arnold.  Arnold came from Wildlife Safari in Winston Oregon.  The 3 females all sisters arrived from the Peoria Zoo in Illinois and they are 3 years old.

"People have been asking when lions would return to the zoo and we are very excited about the opportunity and new exhibit and look forward to showing them off to our guests," Hamilton said.
