State senators Tuesday evening voted 31-4 to approve a proposed amendment to Louisiana's constitution that says there is no right to have an abortion.

It's the latest in a series of pro-life measures that have swept conservative states, as abortion opponents seek to challenge the 1973 Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision that found a woman's right to privacy forbids state governments from outlawing the procedure.

The proposal returns to the Louisiana House for consideration of changes. The House already passed aversion of the bill by an overwhelming margin.

Gov. John Bel Edwards, a pro-life Democrat, say he will sign it if it gets to his desk. The next stop after that would be the voters this fall.
