
Individuals at LSU Heath-New Orleans Medical Center have been honored by the National Cancer Institute for their work in cancer research, detection, treatment and care for cancer stricten patients.
The awards underscore the University's commitment to finding and fighting cancer with innovative treatments. "A lot clinical research is moving towards more targeted therapy and individual therapy and screening for patients," says Dr. Mignonne Morrell, Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology and Academic Director of Breast Imaging, was one of the four recipients.
Dr. Morrell heads up the hospitals imaging and detection efforts. "The trial that I'm involved in is regarding screen and prevention related to mammograms," Morrell says. "So, getting ladies in and investigating 2-D versus 3-D mammograms."
A major component for the LSU Health system is serving and care for under served and minority patients. "LSU is highly invested in these patients," Morrell explains. "Having trials that enroll them provides than an additional access to care and not only that access to care but a safety net through follow ups."
Cancer research and care at LSU Health is getting to the point where a personally crafted treatment engineered to the individual. "One treatment, while maybe excellent for one, may not be what's best for another," Morrell describes. "A lot of clinical research is moving toward more targetted therapy and individual therapy and screening for patients."
