Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni announced that that there will be a mandatory evacuation for parts of Jefferson.
The mandatory order evacuation will be for 2 p.m. today and include Lafitte, Crown Point, Barataria, and the town of Jean Lafitte, in anticipation of the storm system in the Gulf of Mexico that is expected to become stronger and make landfall, possibly as Hurricane Barry by Saturday.
"We called for a mandatory evacuation of lower lying Lafitte, Crown Pointe, Barataria, and Jean Lafitte," Yenni said.
There is also a mandatory evacuation for Grand Isle effective today at 12 noon.
Officials are concerned about the threat of rising waters due to storm surge and want to prevent residents from being stranded in these vulnerable areas.
"We don't people trapped in their homes where we can't get to 'em," Yenni added. "We've already put pumps down there to help get the water out as fast as it comes but when you are talking 10 to 15 inches of rain in probability of this event coming through, we certainly want to be prepared."
