Mandeville driver surrenders after SUV hits kids on a bike

Joel Cairns

After hitting two children on a bicycle with his vehicle and fleeing the scene, a Mandeville man has turned himself in to deputies, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office officials say.

A 13-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy were riding on the same bicycle around 5:30 Friday afternoon in the Bayou Chene subdivision of St. Tammany. 31-year-old Joel Evans Cairns is accused of striking the children with his vehicle and then driving away.

The boy was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. The girl suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Cairns was arrested Saturday morning on two counts of felony hit and run, one count of careless operation and one count of driving under suspension.
