Manhunt underway in N.O. for suspect accused of stealing a deputy's car

A manhunt is underway in New Orleans for a fugitive from St. Charles parish.

Corporal James Grimaldi with the St. Charles Sheriff's Office said in a new release, Michael Stevens John (31), was arrested early yesterday morning at a Pilot gas station on Airline Highway in St. Rose. Grimaldi says John attempting to flee from deputies in what was later determined to be a stolen vehicle.

The deputy handcuffed John and put him in the back of his marked patrol unit. That is when deputies say John managed to climb through the partition, into the driver’s seat and drove off in the deputy’s car.

Another deputy chased John on Airline Highway through three parishes before crashing his vehicle into another car near David Drive in Metairie. The deputy wasn’t hurt, only one person suffered minor injuries.

Surveillance video later showed John parking the marked patrol unit in the 700 block of Tolendano Street in the Garden District before disappearing towards New Orleans.

Michael John is described as a white male, about 5'8" tall and weighing about 140 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes.
