Around 11:30 last night five cars of a freight train parallelling eastbank Highway 39 in Plaquemines Parish came off the tracks.

One errant car reportedly tried to cut across the southbound lanes of the highway causing considerable damage and blocking the roadway.

Lieutenant Chaun Domingue with Plaquemines Sheriff's Office says all five of the cars remained upright and there were no leaks or lost cargo from the cars.

The derailment happened right near the Stolthaven Chemical Storage facility, but the plant was not involved in any way.

Southbound Highway 39 remained blocked overnight into the morning hours as repair crews worked to repair the heavily damaged portion of the roadway.

All five of the railcars were eventually re-railed and removed from the scene.
