More humid today, severe weather tomorrow

The muggy air returns to Southeast Louisiana today.

"Southeasterly winds will continue to pump in Gulf Moisture over us today. This will make it more humid with a mix of sun and clouds. We will be warmer with high temperatures in the lower 80s," according to Dave Nussbaum - WWL-TV Meteorologist.

Tomorrow things could get ugly.

"Active weather is expected on Thursday and you need to stay weather aware all day!"

Nussbaum says a cold front and area of low pressure will move across Louisiana during the day.

"It will be warm with highs in the 80s, very humid and windy (20-30 mph) ahead of the front. When you combine those ingredients with strong upper-level winds and a trough of low pressure you get strong to severe storms."

He says that the Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the region under an Enhanced (Level 3 of 5) Risk for severe weather.

Thursday #Severe Weather Update: @NWSSPC now has all of SE La in a Level 3 Enhanced Risk. We now have a better chance for tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds. It’s rare to have this in #NewOrleans! Stay tuned to @WWLTV for my updated forecast Wed. AM. #lawx #BeOn4 pic.twitter.com/I3n50Nqc99

"The storms will likely contain damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes - some could be strong," Nussbaum warned. "A squall line will be moving out of Texas in the morning and it will track across the state all day. These storms will likely have some damaging winds and a few tornadoes. Ahead of the line will be individual storms, and these are the ones that could produce tornadoes as they move from SW to NE across the area."

He says the timing shows the individual storms starting to develop around midday and continuing into the evening hours. Then the squall line will move through between 8pm and 10pm.

"The cold front will move through Thursday night and the storms will end.  Heavy rain is also expected and we could pick up 1-2 inches." Again, stay weather

Things get much better for Good Friday through Easter Sunday.

"Friday will have some wrap around clouds from the low pressure and we could see stray showers too.  It will be cooler and windy with less humid air. High temperatures will be around 70."

  • Easter Weekend: High pressure will build over us on Holy Saturday, so we will have plenty of sunshine with a light breeze. High temperatures will be in the mid 70s. Expect more sunshine on Easter Sunday with high temperatures around 80.  The weather this weekend will be perfect for any egg hunts, crawfish boils, church services and more. Get out and enjoy it!
