A high-tech camera system is being tested at a couple of parking spots on the streets of New Orleans. This could mean you could get a ticket for time expired at a meter without ever having a parking meter enforcement officer write one out.
The high-tech system would know when the meter runs out. One worker downtown calls it a terrible idea.
"Parking is already expensive as it is, so now you're going to get probably more fines and have to pay more money for parking," he said.
"What if you don't put any money in the meter and you just go park illegally, when does the camera kick in," this man asked.
"Allow me to put a credit card in the meter or it could read off of my license, just some type of a device where I'm just charged for it, don't give me a ticket," another man said. It's not malicious most of the time, right?"
"Absolutely not, that gives you no grace period, this woman noted. "Let's say I'm at the doctor's office, an emergency and something happens, and I can't even get like five extra minutes to run down to my car? Terrible idea."
The city will be testing the system out for the next month to see how it works.
