New Orleans City Council brings up Entergy power plant

The controversial New Orleans Power Station will be discussed by the New Orleans City Council today. The council is set to fine Entergy $5 million for its astroturfing scandal, when people were paid to appear as grass roots supporters of a natural gas powered power plant in New Orleans East.

The plant has had no shortage of criticism in public hearings, but the council seems unlikely to straight-up reverse its 6-1 vote in favor of the plant. New Orleams Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who voted for the plant last year when she was still on the council, still supports it.

"We cannot get off of the fact that power generation in this city does matter," Cantrell told WWL's Newell Normand. "It's not an easy task, you know, and there are hard decisions that we have to make."

Cantrell said their independent analysis shows the city needs the power plant.

"You look at the data, you look at the facts, and you make the decision even if it's a little bitter pill to swallow," she said.
