2019 saw the lowest numbers of homicides, 119-killings, in New Orleans since the 1970's.

In January there were 16 homicides and only two arrests made.

The first murder took place less than 14 hours into the new year.

WWL-TV reported 22-year-old Hakeem Smith was killed on Willowbrae Drive in New Orleans East.

All 16-murders so far this year have been committed with guns.

From Jan. 1 to Jan. 6, seven people were killed in six separate shootings. And from January 23 through January 27, police reported one murder per day in New Orleans.

There was an eight-day stretch from January 12 through January 19 where no murders were reported.

The ages of the victims ranged from 19 to 70 years old.

At the current rate, New Orleans will not meet a lower number for homicides by the end of the year as 204 murders could occur.

The latest murder occurred in the French Quarter near the intersection of Bourbon and Iberville Streets.

Note: There were 16 murders in New Orleans in January, not 17.  One of the victims was shot on Jan. 23 and died the next day. The incident was double-counted as a result.
