New Orleans has a strong connection to Paris and the Notre Dame Cathedral

Here in New Orleans, where our catholic faith is strong, many folks were horrified to watch the Notre Dame Cathedral burn yesterday.

New Orleans was founded by French colonists in 1718 and the reaction to the fire in Paris was strong.

Amy Duvoisin, founder of the Joan Of Arc Project in New Orleans called it horrifying.

We are in prayer for our 'sister city' association in Orleans, France," said Duvoisin.  "Orleans is near Paris."

She said that Joan of Arc was beatified in Paris in 1909 by Pope Pius V at Notre Dame Cathedral.  She says the city's ties are close to Paris and the cathedral.

"Because of our strong catholic roots here in New Orleans, we can't help but think of Notre Dame as something that we are all very attached to," Duvoisin said.  "It's a symbol of so many beautiful things about France, even if you are religious or not."

Duvoisin went on to explain that she believes the church is second, only to the Eiffel Tower when it comes to our images of France.

She said they will continue to acknowledge all of our friends there, adding that many people from New Orleans make trips to Paris, France to visit the cathedral, many have been there on numerous occasions.
