Seventy-one of the new coronavirus infections reported in Louisiana today are in New Orleans, and city health officials say they are "very concerned" about the new numbers. Officials say that is the highest number of new cases since April 20.
"The (average) number of cases a day has more than doubled," said New Orleans health department director Dr. Jennifer Avegno. "Yesterday, it hit above that 50-case-per-day threshold that we had set for ourselves as the danger zone."
If that average number doesn't come down below 50, and other data doesn't improve, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said she will have to reinstate earlier restrictions meant to slow the spread of the disease.
"It's not too late," said Avegno. "We can still get back to where we were."
