Officials say New Orleans will be one of four cities to operate as pilot test sites for drive through coronavirus testing.
The city's Homeland Security Chief Colin Arnold made the announcement Sunday afternoon.
"We are working with our state and federal partners," Arnold explained."New Orleans was selected... to participate in a pilot program to expand testing."
He said he was not ready to release details as the program comes together.
"We expect this program to be up and running by midweek at the latest," Arnold said.
He stressed, however, it will not be for anyone who just wants to be tested.
"I want to be clear, however, that this program initially will be for people meeting very specific criteria; those who are at the greatest risk for exposure and severe illness."
At a White House news conference, officials promised that the new drive through and walk through testing would all for tens of thousands of people to be tested every week.
Arnold said the other cities on a conference call with Washington were Philadelphia, Dallas and Seattle.
"We really fought for it, we asked for it."
