New regulations for abortion clinics passed by Louisiana lawmakers

Louisiana lawmakers have passed new regulations on abortion clinics.

This, after already approving one of the country's strictest abortion bans.

Critics of the new clinic rules say they'll create even additional hurdles to access.  One of the measures would lengthen the time that clinics must keep patient records, with detailed requirements and stiff penalties for violations.

Another provision would require women seeking an abortion to be provided with lengthy background information about the doctor who would perform the procedure.

Gov. John Bel Edwards now has the legislation, and is expected to sign it into law.

The governor has already signed a law banning abortion when a fetal heartbeat is detected...as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

Louisiana joins four other states that have enact such a ban, although Louisiana's law takes effect only if a similar law in Mississippi is upheld in federal court.
