A woman who worked as a teachers aid and a substitute teacher in Terrebonne Parish has avoided jail time and won't have to register as a sex offender.
Heidi Verrett admitted to having sex with 15 and 16-year-old boys.
Cops arrested her in 2016 for having sex with three boys.
The decision is not sitting well with the victims' mothers.
“She’s a predator,” the mother of one victim insisted. “It wasn’t just one child. It was multiple kids.”
That mother chose to remain anonymous.
Another mom, Contadina Maneul questioned, “Why would you do something like this? You have children of your own! Why would you do this to other people’s children?”
Investigators said the three boys were friends with Verrett's children and lived in their neighborhood.
Prosecutors worked out a deal with 34-year-old Verrett. She agreed to plea guilty three misdemeanor charges of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
Under the deal, here sentence was two years of probation.
“I’m disappointed,” Manuel said. “I feel that it’s not fair. She should have to register as a sex offender.”
The third mother also spoke out anonymously about what she said appears to be a double standard.
“I don't know if it's the fact that she's a woman that they didn't take this case seriously,” she said.
The D.A.'s office says they had problems prosecuting the case because of issues surrounding the evidence.
Terrebonne Assistant District Attorney Dennis Elfert said, “The plea offer was discussed with the mothers of the victims... Everybody understood and everybody agreed with the offer.”
The moms insist they did not know that Verrett would not have to register as a sex offender.
One of the mothers said, “You’re giving her the chance to molest again, to offend again.”
The sentence does bar Verrett from teaching for two years.
