No kids in classrooms in New Orleans Public Schools

Public Schools in New Orleans will not have in-person learning to start the school year.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. today announced the system will start with distance learning in August.

He says the data just does not support bringing students into school buildings at this time.

Officials had previously released a plan to have kids return, but Lewis said they had to shift that plan.

He urged the public to take the necessary steps the slow the COVID-19 spread in the city to make it safe for children to get back in classrooms.

Cantrell said that this is probably the most difficult decision to have to make, but not so difficult to make based on the current conditions.

The mayor said it will have a cascading impact on the city, but said everyone will do their best with distance learning.

She then pointed a finger of blame at adults for not leading by example and providing a healthy and safe environment that would allow children to return to schools.

She told the community we need to turn this around and make children the top priority.
