New Orleans film maker Jeffrey Poitier rode out Hurricane Dorian in his native home of the Bahamas.  Poitier spoke with WWL-TV from his home on Cat Island.

He says many members of his family on Grand Bahama are missing.  "In Freeport alone we have 47 members of the Poitier family, only two we've been able to contact."

Poitier, who lives in the Garden District, described what happened as the hurricane lashed the islands for more than a day.  "We're pretty worried...  We're pretty worried...  Because the ocean came in and just took people with it," Poitier says.

Fortunately for Poitier his Cat Island home survived, "We got a hell of lot of rain and a lot of wind, but no damage."

His sister lives in Freeport with her seven children, but she has not been heard from since Dorian hit.  "No one has seen or heard from her before the hurricane, so we're really worried about that."

The film maker will head to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island today to help search for family members.

Poitier is the nephew of Academy Award winning actor, Sidney Poitier.
