New Orleans' superintendent of public schools Dr. Henderson Lewis says he's not yet ready to say if students will return to classrooms after Labor Day.

"I will say that it's very, very promising and that it's trending in the right direction," said Dr. Lewis. "The goal still remains the same: to bring our students back to the classroom for in person learning this fall."

They hope they can make a final decision soon.

"By the end of  next week, we will make an announcement based on the data that we are continuing to follow," Dr. Lewis said, " and be able to share that with our community at that time."

Dr. Lewis said if students return to campus, and later there is another peak in coronavirus cases, they are ready to shift to distance learning if they have to.
