One year ago today, Mississippi legalized sports betting. Numbers show revenue, particularly at Gulf Coast casinos, is up in that state.
Meanwhile Louisiana casinos are seeing falling income.
The man who tried to keep Louisiana competitive by authoring legislation to legalize sports betting in Louisiana says he warned everyone.
"I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so," Louisiana State Senator Danny Martiny told WWL First News. "That's why I filed the sports betting bills the last two years."
Both attempts failed.
"They now have another amenity that attracts more people to play in those casinos."
Martiny stressed that things will only get worse.
"We will end up, if we ever do this... we'll end up being three to four years behind Mississippi."
Martiny says unless the governor calls for the issue to be debated in a special session, it will be 2021 before Louisiana can even consider legalizing sports betting again.
