People delaying emergency care over coronavirus fears, Ochsner hospital officials worry

Ochsner looks to attract new doctors with blockbuster offer

Some people may be putting off important medical care over a misunderstanding about the coronavirus and stay-home mandates, leaders with Ochsner Health Systems said.

Ochsner Health Systems President and CEO Warner Thomas says he worries some people may thing stay at home and a moratorium on elective procedures means hospitals are treating nothing but coronavirus.

"We've heard of people that have had strokes that have delayed care out of fear," said Warner. "Minor heart attacks that have delayed care, broken hips that have delayed care and come in multiple days later."

Thomas said he thinks some patients might be afraid they will be exposing themselves to the coronavirus if they go to the hospital, even for emergency treatment. He said health care workers will do whatever they can to protect patients from getting any other diseases while they're there.
