Beginning today, a Board of Review will hear property assessments appeals for residents in New Orleans who are unhappy with their recent property assessments and have already filed their appeals.

Orleans Assessor Errol Williams says 5,600 have filed appeals and those have been referred to the Board of Review.

"Anybody who has filed an appeal, as of today, they would have been given notices by the Board of Review's consultants to come and make their presentation as to why they believe that the evaluation that the assesor put on them is incorrect," Williams said.

The hearings are organized by the City Council with a third party of appraisers reviewing the property, who will then recommend to the Council what they believe the value of that particular property is.

"If you are in agreement with it, then it ends there," Williams said.  "If you disagree with that recommendation by the consultant, then you have the right to take it to the next level of appeal, which would be the Louisiana Tax Commission."

The hearings will last for the next 2 weeks and be heard at Delgado Community College.
